Jay began drumming at the age of six, and since then it has become more than anything else a part of his life and that which helps define who he is. Coming from a musical family, his father being a bass player back in the sixties, along with his older brother (also a bassist) and his younger brother (also a drummer and sound engineer), he was introduced to music at a very young age and is primarily self-taught. He began playing on a five piece red sparkled Slingerland, and later on discovered Tama drums as his drums of choice, along with Zildjian cymbals. Many of the classic rock drummers have helped define his style. Drummers such as Stewart Copeland's tasteful hi-hat work, Buddy Rich's tight snare rolls, Keith Moon's hectic style of fills, or John Bohnam's loud and off time beats can all be heard in his playing. Most recently he has come to really appreciate Zac Farro as a major influence in his style of playing, incorporating many of the same style tight accented fills into his playing.

He began playing in his parent's basement, drumming along with his older brother or along to the Beatles or other classic rock bands. Throughout the years he has been part of various bands (Triple X, Anti-Social, Five Past Midnight, Juniper, Stewart, Lift/Sunbug, Fossil Fuel, and Torn) but has really found his groove playing with For the Love of Sloane, which really allows him the liberty to explore various styles of drumming.

Focusing primarily on music throughout school, he took courses in theory, history, and African percussion. During his brief college career he took classes in piano and singing, and also used this time to pick up the guitar. While no virtuoso on guitar, it does allow him to write music on his own and explore a different side of music other than being part of the rhythm section. This is where he is allowed to explore outside solo and side projects. He has also studied singing under Amy Del Santo in Providence, RI.
